I’m standing at the corner. I’m still listening.
Midnight Blue.
Oh man. I’ve really slacked off, haven’t I? I’ve even missed my yearly blog update. Sorry. Anyway, Disturbances of Spring is still alive, and so am I. Inching slowly toward the next record…one track, one knob turn, one fader slide at a time.
There’s definitely a certain autumnal darkness to the new songs. I’ve already passed that point a while ago. The point of realizing that there are most likely more years behind me than ahead. So it seems inevitable that the light would thin out and fade around the edges of one’s view. On the other hand, some other things become so much clearer in this same light. The how and why of arriving at where you stand at any given time. An understanding that was out of reach when you were younger and angrier—and had much less of an investment in this life.
Some other stories will be mixed in there too, I’m sure. Things that have happened to me, or to people I know. Or to some that I only knew from a distance. A lot of things to try to make sense of, lately. And it hasn’t been easy. But I’ll try my best.
On the upside, I just found out recently that both Bob Mould and Swervedriver are coming out with new albums early next year. How about that? Sounds like the beginnings of a pretty damn good year in rock music. Let’s hope that Disturbances of Spring will join them a little later on. Let’s bring some guitars back to popular music, shall we?
I never have been all that good at staying in touch. I've just been quietly going about things. The day-to-day, you know how it is. Working up songs for another release. (Blurring in the Corner of Your Eye, by the way, is still very much available in CD and digital format. Check out the Blurring page for purchase links, if you're interested.) I haven't been able to draw a bead on the general theme or timbre of the lyrics quite yet. But if Blurring was a chronicle of a rocky past decade or so of my life, these new songs are reflections of here and now. Some attempt to stay present in this moment, while that other life that could have been keeps fading and growing more distant with time. Life's leaves are turning color. There's no mistaking it now.
I hear more guitars, more dynamics in these upcoming recordings. My guitars have been sounding pretty damn good nowadays, so I'd like to let them stretch out and show a little bit more of their sonic range. We'll see how it all shakes out. And once again, I'll try to be a little more frequent with my posts. We'll see how that shakes out, too. Otherwise... Same time next year?
Disturbancesofspring.com is live. Finally. The band's debut album Blurring in the Corner of Your Eye is available now in CD or digital download. Check the Blurring page to listen, and to find out where to purchase it. I'll post news, thoughts, etc. about the band here. Maybe some new writing pieces too, now and then—hopefully keep things interesting. So enjoy, and thanks for checking out the band. And please check back too, from time to time.
